The Pareto Principle

July 30, 2009 By Robert Corrigan 3 Comments

I doubt that the name Wilfrido Pareto will be familiar but you will know the Pareto Principle under another name, the 80/20 rule. The 19th century economist Wilfrido Pareto was the first to point out that the worlds wealth was split along 80/20 lines, with 80% of the wealth being in the hands of 20% of the world population and vice versa. It is surprising how that principle applies in life, have you noticed that in any given task 80% of the task is accomplished in 20% of the time?

So how does this relate to your eBay or Amazon activities, well you will find that 20% of your product range will produce 80% of the sales. This is why it is so important to be on the lookout for new products all the time. As soon as you have found a hot selling product you will have the market place to yourself for a few weeks (months if you are lucky). So it is important to really hammer the sale of a new product before others catch on to it and the market gets saturated by competitors. This also means weeding out the products that produce a very poor return. You never know, you may prove Wilfrido wrong.

See you soon

My Amazon Challenge Part 1

July 26, 2009 By Robert Corrigan 3 Comments

How many times have you logged onto Amazon and seen the following message, sell you old purchases from Amazon and make………. Have you ever done this? Amazons market place is where you can sell products in several different categories so you can list your entire eBay inventory and sell it on Amazon.

There are two different kinds of accounts:

Individual trading account as its name suggests and

Pro seller account which is for sellers selling more than 35 items per month

There are several advantages to selling on Amazon; firstly you ally yourself with one of the best known global brands, Amazon does not have the flea market image that eBay has. You do not have to pay to list an item you only pay a fee when the item sells, and your postal charges are worked out by Amazon for you. Now you are unlikely to make money from your paperback collection so we need to look at a niche market that gives us more potential.

Academic, specialist and hobby books are a superb source of stock, these can be picked up very cheaply (often for pennies) in charity shops simply because they have no perceived value. Use the ISBN number to search Amazon to see if the item you have found has a resale value. During the summer I am looking for lots of low cost ways to setup new income streams that I can test out.

So here is my challenge, I intend to invest £10 in buying books and reselling them on Amazon to see if I can get a return in these niche markets. I will post my progress during this trial; sign up on my blog to get my weekly newsletter.

See you soon

FINISHED (ALMOST)

July 21, 2009 By Robert Corrigan 4 Comments

After a monumental struggle I have finished, almost (why does there always seem to be an almost?). I have finished work for six weeks and returned to my office Dr. Duncan’s public house in Liverpool to complete the long hand version of my e-book. Away from all the distractions of home and the endless series of 5 minute jobs to do whilst I am doing nothing that make up the vast majority of the days.

No interruptions, from anyone apart from the Everton fan who wanted to discuss the past glories of Everton whenever they were! However, he did the honourable thing and did one when he found out I was a red. Oh, just realised that I need to do another series of screen grabs before the draft is finished. Oh hum, think I was too ambitious on this my first product and should have stuck to something shorter, but quite proud of what I have achieved so far.

I really never thought I could finish this, I hope this provides some encouragement for all those other students (like myself) who have fallen behind, that you can do it. Remember why we all decided to do this in the first place to make a better future for ourselves and our loved ones. Stick in there people!
