The Great Camtasia, FedEx and Cough Mixture Conspiracy

August 17, 2009 By Robert Corrigan 7 Comments

One of the things that John Thornhill has emphasised time and time again is to offer incredible value. Now I don’t really know how his students on the 16 week course managed to keep up because I am about 8 weeks behind already. Ok, let’s add some value….. Record an audio, so I ordered two headsets with microphones and an adapter to use them both at the same time, did some test recordings using sound recorder, worked like a dream. So the morning of the big recording I asked my friend who is a fledgling eBayer to draw up some questions and we would record the interview, straight forward.

Did it work? Did it hell, took me a full 30 mins to work out the problem, I had downloaded the 30 day version of Camtasia video recording and editing software the previous night to try it out. The consequences of that, well Camtasia becomes the default recorder for audio, quite what happens when the 30 day trial expires I do not know. Anyway recorded the interview which sounds a bit contrived to start with but becomes a two way conversation as it progresses and not my usual monolog. Audio sorted! Let’s do some video, after quite a few test recordings I started to do my Amazon series first, 3 or 4 minutes at a time showing how to setup a selling account in market place and how to list books and other items.

So here we go, the last and longest, everything going great, phone goes while recording, its FedEx, “listen mush stump up the VAT now or you don’t get your order”, “but I’m just about to list The Geology of Scotland”. “Just hand the wonga over”. Start again, 6 mins in take coughing fit. Take 3, going great guns… Beep, beep, beep car alarm goes off, scrap it again. Hoping to get it done later, maybe I can book myself into a padded cell away from all distractions.

See you soon… Maybe… “No Egor put him down!” “But master he’s told us nothing!”

Rob

p.s. Q. Hey Rob, why do so many e-mails use such silly names for money in there titles or content or use F.wee or variations of the word free? A. Its all to do with spam content, all spam filters try to weed out spam by looking for e-mail with a high spamming text, these contain amongst them, money words or “free” as these are used so often by spammers The content of this e-letter is checked by AWeber my e-mail company for its spam content before I can send it.

Who Needs a CAMRA?

August 13, 2009 By Robert Corrigan 1 Comment

Answer we all do! No it’s not one of my spelling mistooks (for a change) it’s the Campaign for Real Ale. CAMRA is an organisation close to my heart and stomach, so why am I blogging about this? Last Saturday night I went out with my friend Mike for a few drinks. We ended the night as we usually do in the Ship and Mitre public house in Liverpool, one of my favourite pubs. Now my family have a long association with the Ship as my grandfather Edward drank there every Sunday, when it was a Bents house. My father used to take me along in the afternoon (to collect granddad and return him home he said) sit me on the step with a lemonade and a packet of crisps while he went to find granddad. I often thought it must be a big place as it seemed to take him ages.

I have drank there for many years as it has been a haven for real ales for many a long year. But when it changed hands several years ago it went from strength to strength. Anyway I had not been there for sometime, and when we went in we found it had won CAMRA pub of the year 2009. Well done guys an outstanding achievement!! Check out the Ship and Mitres website click HERE

Oh and by the way guess where this blog post was written from… Yes you guessed it, Wetherspoons, but I’m on my way to the Ship now.

Next time the great CAMTASIA, FedEx and ASDA Bronchial Balsam conspiracy.

See you soon

Masterclass Week 25,26 or 27….

August 7, 2009 By Robert Corrigan 3 Comments

To tell the truth I’m not sure which week it is, at the moment I have fallen so far behind that I am trying to catch up on so many chores whilst I am off work. I am working on several different parts to my product at the same time, in the past week I have:

  • Written an 8 part mini course
  • Completed all the written parts to my e-books (I hope)
  • Written a workbook to go with the e-books
  • Written a directory of sources I use or have used to obtain products

Lots still to do of course, I am the moment collecting testimonials. I have one from a work colleague who has just recently become a Powerseller, well done Paul! I told you it was possible. I have also received some amazing testimonials from Steve King and Andres Luna, thanks guys your comments have really given me a buzz. I have also been fortunate to have had my manuscripts proof read by Mandy Allen and my brother Peter who have made many valuable suggestions for improvements, thanks to both of these good people.

I have also been privileged to have read the manuscripts of other Masterclass students. Tom Aspin and Ann O’Leary who are both in the fields of health and well being and show the real importance of a common sense approach written by practitioners in their own field. I have also reviewed Steve Wilkins book on making money from PLR materials. Again a straight forward common sense approach to the subject, no waffle, no smoke and no mirrors. Steve has included an excellent workbook as part of his package.

But what I liked best is the grid Steve uses to determine what you can or more importantly can’t do with each PLR product as each one has a different licensing agreement. Oh and by the way I even managed to find the time to go over to Leeds and spend the day in Harrogate with my twin nephews and my baby niece. So back home sitting in the beer garden of The Crofters.

Hey Rob, want another beer! Sure do I think I’ve earned it.

Bye for now, Rob.

The Pareto Principle

July 30, 2009 By Robert Corrigan 3 Comments

I doubt that the name Wilfrido Pareto will be familiar but you will know the Pareto Principle under another name, the 80/20 rule. The 19th century economist Wilfrido Pareto was the first to point out that the worlds wealth was split along 80/20 lines, with 80% of the wealth being in the hands of 20% of the world population and vice versa. It is surprising how that principle applies in life, have you noticed that in any given task 80% of the task is accomplished in 20% of the time?

So how does this relate to your eBay or Amazon activities, well you will find that 20% of your product range will produce 80% of the sales. This is why it is so important to be on the lookout for new products all the time. As soon as you have found a hot selling product you will have the market place to yourself for a few weeks (months if you are lucky). So it is important to really hammer the sale of a new product before others catch on to it and the market gets saturated by competitors. This also means weeding out the products that produce a very poor return. You never know, you may prove Wilfrido wrong.

See you soon

My Amazon Challenge Part 1

July 26, 2009 By Robert Corrigan 3 Comments

How many times have you logged onto Amazon and seen the following message, sell you old purchases from Amazon and make………. Have you ever done this? Amazons market place is where you can sell products in several different categories so you can list your entire eBay inventory and sell it on Amazon.

There are two different kinds of accounts:

Individual trading account as its name suggests and

Pro seller account which is for sellers selling more than 35 items per month

There are several advantages to selling on Amazon; firstly you ally yourself with one of the best known global brands, Amazon does not have the flea market image that eBay has. You do not have to pay to list an item you only pay a fee when the item sells, and your postal charges are worked out by Amazon for you. Now you are unlikely to make money from your paperback collection so we need to look at a niche market that gives us more potential.

Academic, specialist and hobby books are a superb source of stock, these can be picked up very cheaply (often for pennies) in charity shops simply because they have no perceived value. Use the ISBN number to search Amazon to see if the item you have found has a resale value. During the summer I am looking for lots of low cost ways to setup new income streams that I can test out.

So here is my challenge, I intend to invest £10 in buying books and reselling them on Amazon to see if I can get a return in these niche markets. I will post my progress during this trial; sign up on my blog to get my weekly newsletter.

See you soon

Rob

FINISHED (ALMOST)

July 21, 2009 By Robert Corrigan 4 Comments

After a monumental struggle I have finished, almost (why does there always seem to be an almost?). I have finished work for six weeks and returned to my office Dr. Duncan’s public house in Liverpool to complete the long hand version of my e-book. Away from all the distractions of home and the endless series of 5 minute jobs to do whilst I am doing nothing that make up the vast majority of the days.

No interruptions, from anyone apart from the Everton fan who wanted to discuss the past glories of Everton whenever they were! However, he did the honourable thing and did one when he found out I was a red. Oh, just realised that I need to do another series of screen grabs before the draft is finished. Oh hum, think I was too ambitious on this my first product and should have stuck to something shorter, but quite proud of what I have achieved so far.

I really never thought I could finish this, I hope this provides some encouragement for all those other students (like myself) who have fallen behind, that you can do it. Remember why we all decided to do this in the first place to make a better future for ourselves and our loved ones. Stick in there people!

Tech Support

May 29, 2009 By Robert Corrigan 5 Comments

Hi all, just thought I would share this with you, I read an earlier version of this about 6 years ago, but I got this in my e-mail today, updated and much better than the original.

Dear Technical Support,

18 months ago, I upgraded to Girlfriend 1.0 from Drinking Mates 4.2, which I had used for years without any trouble.

However, there are apparently conflicts between these two products and the only solution was to try and run Girlfriend 1.0 with the sound turned off. To make matters worse,
Girlfriend 1.0 is incompatible with several other applications, such as LadsNightOut 3.1, Football 4.5, and Playboy 6.9.

Successive versions of Girlfriend proved no better.

I tried a shareware program, Slapper 2.1, but it had many bugs and left a virus in my system, forcing me to shut down completely for several weeks.

Eventually, I tried to run Girlfriend 1.2 and Girlfriend 1.0 at the same time, only to discover that when these two systems detected each other they caused severe damage to my hardware.

I eventually upgraded to Fiancée 1.0, only to discover that this product soon had to be upgraded further to Wife 1.0.

While Wife 1.0 tends to use up all my available resources, it does come bundled with CookingPlus and Cleanhouse2008.

Shortly after this upgrade, however, I found that Wife 1.0 could be very unstable and costly to run.. Any mistakes I made were automatically stored in Wife 1.0’s memory and could not be deleted. They then resurfaced months later when I had forgotten
about them.

Wife 1.0 also has an automatic Diary, Explorer and E-mail filter, and can, without warning, launch TurboStrop and Multi-Whinge.

These latter products have no Help files, and I have to try to guess what the problem is.

Additional problems are that Wife 1.0 needs updating regularly, requiring ShoeShop Browser for new attachments and Hairstyle Express which needs to be re installed every other week.

Also, when Wife 1.0 attaches itself to my Saab 93 Convertible hard drive, it often crashes.

Wife 1.0 also comes with an irritating pop-up called MotherInLaw, which can’t be turned off.

Recently I’ve been tempted to install Mistress 2007, but there could be problems. A friend of mine has alerted me to the fact that if Wife 1.0 detects Mistress 2007, it tends to delete all of your Money before uninstalling itself.

Help requested please!

And the flip side…

Dear Tech Support:

Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a distinct slow down in the overall performance, particularly in the Flower and Jewellery applications, which
operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0.

In addition, Husband 1.0 un-installed many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5 and then installed undesirable programs such as: Football 5.0, Rugby 4.3 and Cricket 3.0.

Conversation 8.0 no longer runs; it simply crashes the system.

I’ve tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, to no avail.

What can I do?

Signed,

Desperate

Dear Desperate:

First keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while Husband 1.0 is an Operating System.

Try entering the command: C:/ITHOUGHTYOULOVEDME to download Tears 6.2, which should automatically install Guilt 3.0. If that application works as designed, Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications Jewellery 2.0 and Flowers 3.5. But remember, overuse of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour 7.0, or Beer 6.1.

WARNING: Beer 6.1 is a very nasty program that will create Flatulism 6.2

CAUTION: Whatever you do, DO NOT install Mother-in-law. This is not a supported application and will crash Husband 1.0.

In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance. I personally recommend Hot Food 3.0 and Lingerie 7.7.

Good Luck,
Tech Support

I Made The Pub My Office

May 25, 2009 By Robert Corrigan 3 Comments

One of the many reasons for starting online business selling information or physical products is the desire to give up work and “work” from home. At home I have set myself up with a work area, with all I need to run my business just waiting for that day, glorious day when I can cast off the chains of being a wage slave and work from home.

However when I work from home I have noticed how unproductive that this arrangement is. Have you had the following…

“Can you……….”

“I’m doing…..”

“You can do that later”

“All you do is play with that computer all day”

“But I’m working on………..”

“Can’t you do that later?”

I think you may be able to add a few dozen alternatives or variations to the above themes. Also beware of the time thieves who know you are at home and are forever dropping by or ringing you, this never happens when I am at work. I recently dropped by John Thornhill’s blog to find that he had stopped working from home and had rented himself office space, which he had found had greatly increased his productivity.

I cannot yet afford a “proper office” (quick note just been interrupted typing this) but I do have office premises, two in fact. These are places I can hide away in and not be found, no phone no callers, no requests to take out the bin bag, no “quick trip to the shops while I’m doing nothing” etc.

Ok, I will let you in on the secret, I can be found in the snug of Dr. Duncan’s public house in Liverpool where I do most of my writing with my pen and note pad, or my local public library with my laptop.

It’s a lot more productive than working at home.

Are You Visible?

May 16, 2009 By Robert Corrigan 2 Comments

One of the changes thrust upon us by eBay on September 24th 2008 was the introduction of the “Best Fit Policy”. This is little understood even by eBay itself.  The policy was brought in to “reward” sellers who give great service and who offer incredible value for money. It was NOT brought in, repeat NOT brought in to attract high street traders or major retailers like Amazon has managed to attract, and therefore generate more income for eBay.

You will notice that some listings appear very high up in the search results, despite the fact that they may have 20 or more days to go until the end of the listing. This indicates several things.

  • The seller has used the correct keywords to fit the category
  • They are selling a lot of products from the listing; this moves the sellers listing even higher in the search results. Relisting a successful item also helps push the listing higher in the results.
  • They are maintaining excellent customer satisfaction and do not charge excessive postage costs.

I sell some products in a very hot and competitive market. I always did well with this product but not as well as the top sellers in the category. I had always sold on BINS (buy it now). BINS then ended in chronological order. Some of my other products were sold with a featured listing; this meant that they eventually appeared on the top of the search results making their way onto the top page as the listing progressed. The featured listing costs approx £10 so that you need to sell a lot of products off one listing to make it economical.

So what happened to my listings after 24/9/08? All of the above simple ways of listings changed, now the top sellers were doing very much better than me. This was due to higher visibility of my competitors listings, my listings never got on to the first page even with featured listings. I was recently researching a market which had 8 pages of listings in the category. At the bottom of page 8 was a listing for a product that was an excellent category fit, its title was good, the photo was also good and the description excellent. No sales and only 3 views!!

So how do you get your listing seen? The only way to guarantee visibility is the auction format. This will ensure your item gets on the first page; you can also offer it with a BIN option (at the usual small additional cost). Don’t use any of the other “small cost” additional items such bold, coloured band, subtitle etc. This will cost!!

Other advice, as always look at small niche areas for less competition, you can introduce a new product into the niche using the auction format to ensure it is seen. Then follow up with a BIN when you have made some sales.
